WHEN WILL MY HAIR BE THIS LONG AGAIN!
Controversial and could potentially could get shot down in flames but here I go..
I have no doubt that a child with Downs Syndrome can give a parent the unconditional love and feeling of wholeness that any other child does. Your child is your child, with or without a disability.
I also appreciate that in today’s society, many couples would abort a foetus showing Downs due to cosmetic reasons and even embarrassment. I’m not saying that’s a valid reason to abort, but it happens.
However, I think it need to be said that sometimes, abortion really is the best thing to do if a couple don’t think they could cope with some difficulties raised with having a disabled child.
I understand that children are born with differing degrees of Downs and that many of these kids will go on to live a fairly or fully independent life, but for others, they will require a significant amount of care even past childhood. And in childhood, many kids with Downs Syndrome will need parents who are willing to go the extra mile to ensure he/she has the highest quality of care and education.
I’m a 100% believer that disabled children can go on to achieve amazing things with the right help and attitude, and that having a disabled child is just as fulfilling and rewarding as having a fully able child. However I am also 100% Pro Choice, and believe expecting parents should be able to make whatever decision they choose without pressure from society making them think they’re doing something wrong by aborting a child they could never fully support.
